Manchester City are set to miss out on millions of pounds if Leeds United are relegated from the Premier League.

City have already wrapped up a third consecutive Premier League title, but at the other end of the table, the drama is continuing right up until the final day.

With one game left to play, there are three teams who will be fighting to avoid relegation on the final day. Only one will be successful.

Leeds and Leicester are 19th and 18th in the standings respectively with 31 points each, while Everton sit two points above them in 17th.

All three play at home on the final day, with Everton hosting Bournemouth, Leeds taking on Tottenham and Leicester facing West Ham.

Should Leeds go down, then City could miss out on a pretty substantial boost to their transfer kitty.

It’s no secret that City spend a lot on transfers, but what is less widely acknowledged is that they make up for that through player sales.

City’s net spend over the last five years has been £224.97m, the 10th largest in the division.

The sales of Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko contributed to City turning an £8.3m transfer profit last summer.

For that to become a regular occurrence though, City need to keep bringing in good money for players.

Aside from transfer fees, another way they can do that is by inserting sell-on clauses into deals.

That’s exactly what City did when they sold Jack Harrison to Leeds in 2021.

When Newcastle approached Leeds over the winger last summer, the Yorkshire club held firm on their evaluation of over £35m.

If Harrison were to fetch that kind of fee then, as reported by The Telegraph in 2021, City would receive a hefty sell-on fee.

Harrison recently signed a new five-year deal at Elland Road, but according to The Athletic his deal contains a release clause if Leeds are relegated.

If Harrison ends up leaving for a fraction of his £35m value – a number of Premier League sides are interested in him – then City would miss out on a potentially hefty payday.

Pep Guardiola’s side have no skin in the game regarding the final day, but bosses at the Etihad Stadium might be keeping a close eye on what happens on the other side of the Pennines.
