George Byers’ emotional Sheffield Wednesday admission over Owls future

Sheffield Wednesday fan favourite, George Byers, says that there is ‘nowhere that I’d rather be’ than at Hillsborough on a long-term basis.

The Owls midfielder will see his current Wednesday contract expire at the end of the current campaign, however the club do have a one-year option to exercise that would see him stick around for the 2023/24 campaign back in the Championship.

For Byers, though, he doesn’t want just one more season. And he says that he’s hoping to have talks with the club in the coming weeks that will see him stay at S6 for a long time to come.

“This club has got a place in my heart,” he said with a smile and a slight quiver in his voice. “I’ve been here a couple of years now, and this fanbase, everyone involved with the club, has just sucked me in. There’s nowhere that I’d rather be than at this football club. I’d love to stay here for the long-term, and hopefully in the summer there will be talks and I can stay here for a long time.

“This place means so much to me, the fans mean so much to me. To see them at Wembley, I can’t even put it into words how much it means to me. I’ve seen players like Palms and Baz that have been here for years, and the way they talk about by the club is how I feel now.

“I’d love to be here for the long-term, so we’ll see what happens in the summer.”

Sheffield Wednesday supporters deliver unanimous Josh Windass verdict as contract decisions loom

Yorkshire Live asked Wednesdayites to tell us who they would keep and who they would release amid the vast number of contracts set to expire at Hillsborough this summer

Sheffield Wednesday are still basking in the joy of sealing promotion to the Championship.

But just around the corner is the annual retained list that the club will be publishing. It is expected to land in the next few days and the number of players in that particular boat is sizeable

With that in mind we asked Wednesdayites to channel their inner Darren Moore and tell us what their decision would be, using our ‘keep or sell’ tool. Club stalwart Liam Palmer was one of the many soon to be out-of-contract but since the Wembley win he has revealed he triggered a clause that entitles him to an extension, although the club have yet to confirm that.Of the other 14 players, two saw a whopping 98 per cent of respondents vote to keep them – Josh Windass and George Byers.

Palmer received an encouraging 94 per cent of voters clicking ‘renew’ whilst loanee Reece James saw 86 per cent of readers choose the same option. With his parent club Blackpool swapping divisions with the Owls following their relegation, it remains to be seen if Moore will try and negotiate a deal for the defender.Eighty-two per cent of respondents would like to keep another loanee, Aden Flint. The giant centre-half had an up-and-down loan stint but with his contract at Stoke set to expire he is available on a free.
