Sheffield United goalkeeper Wes Foderingham is out of contract this season, however, remains wanted by the soon-to-be Premier League club, according to journalist Alan Nixon.

The former Swindon Town and Rangers keeper has had a successful season with the Blades, which saw them finish 2nd in the Championship. Now returning to the top division in English football, the shot-stopper may get an opportunity to be the number-one if he returns.

Who Is Wes Foderingham?

Starting in Fulham’s academy from the early age of nine, the goalkeeper progressed through the ranks but never made an appearance for the West London club. Switching to the other side of the capital with Crystal Palace, a loan spell with Swindon in League Two jumpstarted his career. Part of a team which won the title with Paolo Di Canio, Foderingham signed with the Robins on a permanent deal and went on to make 191 appearances for the club.

After losing 4-0 to Preston North End in the League One Play-Off final, the Englishmen signed with Scottish giants Rangers and became first choice early on. Spending five seasons with the Gers, Foderingham fell out of favour and moved back to England with Sheffield United. In back-to-back seasons with the Blades, the keeper has kept 36 clean sheets over that time and has been a key contributor to the club’s success.

A Path From The National League To The Premier League

If the 32-year-old does resign in Sheffield, he will be one of the exclusive players to feature in each of English’s top five divisions. With an interesting journey that has seen him win trophies and also scrabble with managers, Foderingham has shown that there is a path from the lower leagues to the top, even if there are troubled times along the way.

Writer’s View

As a Swindon fan, it’s great to see an ex-player potentially reach the Premier League, even if it’s not with the club. Despite being in the latter of his prime, Foderingham is still succeeding with the Blades and has shown he is high Championship quality at worst. By the sound of things both parties would like a deal to happen, so keep an eye out for the big man next season.
