Sheffield Wednesday are the latest club to be linked with a move for the Imps’ outgoing star, Regan Poole, according to the Sheffield Star.

Unsurprisingly, Poole was not offered a new deal at the end of the season, but it was more a case of knowing he wanted to play higher up the football pyramid, rather than us not wanting to keep him. After two-and-a-half years with the Imps, the 24-year-old has proven himself capable of playing higher and rightly wants a chance to do that.

Sheffield Wednesday wouldn’t have had a chance of signing him a few weeks ago, but their play-off win against Barnsley sees them return to the second tier after two seasons, and that opens the door for a Poole move. The Owls are likely to settle into the Championship in much the same way Sunderland have, and could well be midtable with little effort next season. That would appeal to Poole, who it is believed has aspirations of playing for his country. With respect to other clubs I’ve seen him linked with, such as QPR, Sheffield Wednesday are bigger. The bigger the club, the better the chance of him getting that elusive call-up he so richly deserves.

Darren Moore plays a 3-5-2, and that could pave the way for Poole to sit on the right side of defence. It’s believed he doesn’t want to play as a wing-back, which might be where the Owls want him to play, having featured the likes of Marvin Johnson there this season.

Of course, this is all academic to us. We are not set to receive a fee for Poole, as he is over 24, so our interest is purely in the future of a soon-to-be former Imp, rather than a financial one. However, Poole has been a solid servant to the Imps, Player of the Season in 2021/22, and a top performer last time out as well. He’ll be sorely missed at Sincil Bank, and I think where he ends up is of interest to us all – especially as it paves the way for other young players to come to the club, knowing we develop them and facilitate a move up the ranks.
