Fabrizio Romano: Leeds flop ‘will leave’, multiple clubs ‘keen’ to sign him

Junior Firpo is set to leave Leeds United with “several European clubs” wanting to sign him this summer, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The former Barcelona left-back has struggled at Elland Road and saw Pascal Struijk preferred to him as starting left-back for much of the season.

Various players are expected to leave the club during the transfer window following relegation, and the 26-year-old is a candidate to be one after two seasons in England.

Reporting via Twitter Romano said: “Understand Junior Firpo will leave Leeds United this summer as several European clubs are already keen on signing him.

“The plan is to try a new experience after relegation.”

Inevitable

Firpo’s time at Leeds United won’t be remembered particularly fondly, as he has regularly been a target for criticism from the fans for his performances on the pitch.

He can’t have enjoyed his time much either, as he failed to nail down a starting spot for any great length of time amid two relegation battles after arriving from the Camp Nou.

The sacking of Jesse Marsch in February looked to have given him a reprieve as he came back into the starting line up under both Michael Skubala and then Javi Gracia, scoring the first goal of the Spaniard’s reign in the 1-0 win over Southampton (25 February).

But that proved to be a false dawn as his form collapsed along with his teammates when the wheels fell off under the former Watford boss.

His chaotic game under Sam Allardyce in the 2-2 draw against Newcastle (13 May), where he gave away a penalty and was sent off, was emblematic of his time at the club.

He will hope for a more positive experience back in Europe, and Leeds will hope to get a reasonable fee for a player who never truly fit at Elland Road.
