Lionel Messi’s move to join Inter Miami has proved an exciting transfer for football fans around the world. However, Luton Town fans could soon be left ruing the day the World Cup winner made the move to MLS.

Messi has finally been unveiled as the newest high-profile signing in Major League Soccer. The 36-year-old joins David Beckham’s franchise after claiming almost every trophy and individual award available.

While football stars, including his former Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets, are eyeing a move to play alongside the Argentine, players currently at Inter Miami won’t be in a rush to leave. This is where Luton Town comes in.

The Hatters enjoyed incredible success in the Championship and were awarded promotion to the Premier League last season. In a bid to avoid the drop in the upcoming season the club are in need of reinforcements and have been eyeing a move for Miami’s Venezuelan striker Josef Martinez.

At 30-years-old, Martinez still has plenty of years ahead of him and has excelled in MLS. Despite only joining the side in January he has spent the last five years in America, signing for Atlanta United in 2017 following a successful loan spell.

Over 158 games for Atlanta, Martinez bagged 111 goals and 17 assists and would be a valuable asset for any Premier League side. However, with Messi now becoming his teammate he could be reluctant to leave for a reported £10million fee, reports The Sun. The fee would eclipse the club’s recent £4million move for Birmingham City winger Tahith Chong, Luton’s most expensive signing to date.

Although being unable to sign a player of Martinez’s quality would be a miss, Luton do have a prolific goal-scorer in their ranks. Last season Carlton Morris finished third in the Championship’s top scorer list with 20 goals and seven assists in 47 games, just under a goal-a-game.

Messi’s move to Inter Miami comes after a two year spell at Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain. The Argentine joined after almost two decades at Barcelona where he lifted Seven Ballon d’Ors, four Champions League trophies and ten LaLiga titles.
