QPR trying to agree deal to sign defender Forino

QPR are trying to push through a deal to sign Wycombe central defender Chris Forino.

Rangers’ former Chairboys boss Gareth Ainsworth is keen to take the 23-year-old to Loftus Road.

Wycombe are reluctant to sell Forino and QPR are severely restricted by Financial Fair Play rules, but negotiations are ongoing.

Ainsworth wants to sign at least one centre-back before the start of the new season.

His options in that position are currently limited, with Rob Dickie having been sold and Leon Balogun recently leaving, while Jake Clarke-Salter continues to be troubled by injuries.

Clarke-Salter, who was unavailable for much of last season, went off just 17 minutes after coming on in a recent pre-season game against Slavia Prague. He is not expected to feature in Saturday’s friendly at AFC Wimbledon.

Rangers are looking to strengthen in midfield as well – and bring in a right-back to compete for a place with Osman Kakay.

Lewis Wing, who also played under Ainsworth at Wycombe, is out of contract and currently an option if QPR decide to go ahead with the signing.

That deal might well go through at some stage. In the meantime, other targets are being pursued.

Rangers wanted Max Power but he joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Qadsiah after leaving Wigan.

In terms of possible outgoings, no approaches have been made for any of QPR’s established first-team players since Middlesbrough moved for Seny Dieng.

There is an expectation, however, that there will be interest in Ilias Chair later in the transfer window.

There have been several enquiries about Sinclair Armstrong but Ainsworth does not want the teenage striker to go out on loan.

The 26-year-old is a free agent after leaving Loftus Road over the summer and has spent a time on trial with the club- even featuring in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat to Sutton United.

A Championship regular with almost 100 appearances for the R’s under his belt, the central midfielder featured 21 times as the West London outfit narrowly avoided relegation.

He appeared just six times in 2020/21 after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament- the second time he had done so in three years after doing the same just one month after his Premier League debut in 2018.
