Matt Doherty due for Wolves medical ahead of free transfer

Matt Doherty will reportedly be undergoing his medical today, ahead of a sensational return to Wolves.

Wanderers are swooping to sign the 31-year-old on a free transfer, after his release by Atletico Madrid.

Doherty left Wolves three years ago to join Tottenham Hotspur, but the move did not really work out in the end.

He had some success when Antonio Conte came in and changed their system to one that closely resembled the one he played in for many years at Wolves.

But he was unable to nail down his place.

Doherty is now on the verge of making a move back to the club he really made his name at.

According to journalist Tom Collomosse, Doherty is set to undergo his medical today, ahead of completing a free transfer.

That could potentially mean an official announcement from the club will arrive this evening or tomorrow.

Wolves have just returned from a training camp in Portugal.

But they will be returning to the Algarve for a game against FC Porto, a game Doherty – who was recently described as ‘an unbelievable player’ by Molineux legend Steve Bull – will hopefully play some part in.

Wolves then go to Dublin to take on Celtic at the Aviva Stadium on July 29.

Games against Luton Town and French outfit Rennes will follow.

Matt Doherty return to Molineux is fascinating

It looks like Doherty’s move back to Wolves is now fairly imminent.

It has to be said, this really is a fascinating situation.

At the time of his exit three years ago, Doherty was arguably the most effective wing-back in the Premier League.

He had a fantastic understanding of the position and was a big threat for Wolves in the final third.

But Wolves, of course, no longer play with wing-backs so it makes the Doherty move very interesting. He is clearly much more at home playing as a wing-back.

Julen Lopetegui may feel as though he can help him to be better in a back four.

Or perhaps the plan is to mainly use Doherty from the bench, after he has gone to a wing-backs system in-game.
