Wolves midfielder Luke Cundle is in advanced talks to join Plymouth Argyle on loan, sources have told Football Insider.

The 21-year-old has been a target for a number of EFL clubs this summer, but Plymouth are now in the driving seat as they look to bring the player to Home Park.

Wolves are happy to loan out Cundle again this season after a successful spell on loan at Swansea City last term.

He was named on the bench for the first three games of the Premier League season last term but joined the Welsh side just days before the transfer deadline.

The youngster made 34 appearances across all competitions for Swansea, notching three goals and four assists.

He managed 22 starts among those outings as the Swans registered a 10th-place finish in the Championship.

Cundle could now return to the second tier with recently-promoted Plymouth after failing to make an impression on Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui in pre-season.

The midfielder was included in the short training camp in Portugal earlier last month but was omitted from the squad for recent games against Porto, Celtic and Rennes.

His contract at Molineux is set to expire in June 2026 after coming through the ranks at the Midlands club.

Cundle has made seven senior appearances for Wolves to date, starting twice in the Premier League.

He can play in a number of midfield roles, including in holding midfield and in a more attacking role.

Plymouth got off to a winning start in their return to the Championship on Saturday (5 August), beating Huddersfield 3-1 at home.

Wolves start their Premier League campaign against Man United on 14 August.

Whatever frustrations Julen Lopetegui has with the club’s spending plans haven’t affected the way he’s worked with the current squad.

Matheus Cunha made that clear after the striker impressed in Saturday’s 3-1 win at home to Stade Rennais, Wolves’ final pre-season friendly before the action begins in earnest with the Premier League opener at Manchester United on August 14.

Lopetegui has voiced his concerns in a summer in which Wolves have raised around £90m from player sales but only brought in back up keeper Tom King and right back Matt Doherty.

Cunha isn’t getting involved in club politics but says the manager has been upbeat and focused on the training ground as he prepares the squad for the new campaign.

He said: “When we look at him he seems happy with us. He always arrives in a happy mood at the training ground and he teaches us a lot. He can see me and all my teammates happy to do everything for the club and support him even more. Off the pitch what happens is none of my business.

“I need to do all of my business on the pitch and I’m happy at how I’m doing. And I hope to support the team a lot.”

Chairman Jeff Shi has stressed that Wolves have had to rein in spending this year to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations. He has also made the point the club spent far more than usual in January, around £75m, as they effectively used a chunk of this summer’s budget six months early.

One of those January signings was Cunha who arrived from Atletico Madrid for £44m. The 24-year-old striker, who scored twice in his 12 starts and five substitute appearances last season, looked sharp on Saturday as he spearheaded a forward line that proved too good for the visitors.

Ligue 1 side Rennais had beaten West Ham and Nottingham Forest in their last two friendlies but were sunk by goals from Rayan Ait-Nouri and half-time subs Joao Gomes and Hee Chan Hwang.
