Southampton looking to pip Sheffield United to signing of Everton player

Championship side Southampton are looking into the possibility of signing Everton’s Mason Holgate this summer.

Holgate is set to leave Goodison Park after falling down the pecking order and there are a host of clubs believed to be willing to sign him.

Of course, we know Sheffield United have been linked with a move for Holgate for some time now. Right at the start of the window, Holgate was mentioned as a player of interest for United.

But according to Sky Sports, it is Southampton who are now considering making a bid for the former Barnsley man.

Sky reports how Southampton are looking at getting Holgate on loan, although there is a disagreement over wage contributions as it stands.

It’s also claimed that Everton would rather sell Holgate permanently, with other clubs said to be keen.

Whether or not the Blades are still in the mix, remains to be seen. United have signed Auston Trusty as a new defender and priorities have now turned to the attacking end of the pitch.

The Blades have spent money in recent weeks on both Gustavo Hamer and Vinicius Souza. But after selling Iliman Ndiaye and Sander Berge, it’s believed more cash is available for Paul Heckingbottom to spend.

Right now, the signing of someone like Mason Holgate isn’t at the top of anyone’s list. On paper, the back five is not looking too bad at the moment, barring a lack of serious depth.

For now, United need to add more in the final third. Paul Heckingbottom has called for more signings and he deserves them.

Forwards and another attacking midfielder would not go amiss. Failure to bring in players who can help in those positions will simply mean a quick relegation for United. It’s that simple.
