Risky defensive choice as Gary O’Neil picks his debut lineup – Wolves predicted XI v Man Utd – gallery
Here’s how we predict Wolverhampton Wanderers’ starting lineup to look against Manchester United in the Premier League on Monday.
Wolverhampton Wanderers kick off the new Premier League campaign with a challenging away trip to Manchester United on Monday evening.
The Red Devils finished third last season and will be eager to improve on that, starting with what they hope will be a dominant victory over a shaken-up opposition.
It’s been a chaotic week at Molineux with head coach Julen Lopetegui departing and Gary O’Neil coming in, meaning Wolves may struggle to fully compose themselves ahead of the clash.
Former AFC Bournemouth boss O’Neil has only had a matter of days with his new players and he will still be figuring out his favoured personnel come game day.
With that in mind, flick through the pages to see our best attempt at predicting O’Neil’s debut starting XI, as well as brief explanations for each of our inclusion
1. GK – Jose Sa
Should stay as the number one ‘keeper despite a change of manager.
2. RB – Matt Doherty
Risky pick as he hasn’t started since re-signing, but O’Neil likes crosses in from wide and we think Doherty edges Semedo for that.
3. CB – Craig Dawson
The experience and solidity of Dawson is expected to be vital as Wolves adjust.
4. CB – Max Kilman
The new skipper – and kept as so by O’Neil – has seemingly cemented his spot alongside Dawson.
5. LB – Rayan Ait-Nouri
O’Neil looking back at the Rennes game will probably convince himself to pick the Algerian after a goal and stellar display.
6. CM – Mario Lemina
Provides both energy and balance in midfield. Could be key in the physical battle with Casemiro.
7. CM – Joao Gomes
The Brazilian has so much potential and has the opportunity to unleash it this season.
8. CAM – Pablo Sarabia
Didn’t often play behind the striker under Lopetegui but has done plenty previously throughout his career.
9. RM – Matheus Nunes
Did brilliantly out on the left against Rennes but we think he’ll go on the right to allow for the next pick to be more familiar with his position.
10. LM – Pedro Neto
Was one of the most direct and dangerous Wolves men in pre-season and will be eager to cut in from the left.
11. ST – Matheus Cunha
Has solidified his place in the lineup over recent months following a £44 million transfer from Atletico Madrid.
