Looking Good: Ex-defender says Tangerines are showing textbook league-winning mentality

LEE WILKIE: Dundee United showing textbook league-winning mentality

The Tangerines found a way to win against Airdrie and that’s a good sign says ex-defender Lee Wilkie.

Dundee United are showing textbook league-winning mentality.

It’s still very early in the Championship campaign but the signs are good already.

Obviously being top of the table is a big positive but the nature of Saturday’s win bodes well for me.

They are doing exactly what they need to do.

Yes, Airdrie were good and kept the ball really well.

They’ll do that to plenty teams this season, though.

I expect them to be causing problems to everyone in the division right through the season.

But despite not being at their best, United beat them.

Sound defence

Defensively, Jim Goodwin’s side are looking pretty sound – just one goal conceded in the league so far.

That’s crucial if you want to be winning this division.

Because you can’t expect performances like Ayr and Arbroath every week.

But a solid backline allows you to pick up wins when things aren’t quite going to plan in an attacking sense.

And that’s what I saw from Saturday’s display.

Performance can be better but United did the one thing they needed to do – win the game.

Next up they have the SPFL Trust Trophy clash with Dunfermline.

I suspect Goodwin will use that as a chance to give some fringe players some minutes and allow players carrying knocks a wee break.

The league is the only focus.

Hearts youngster loaned to Dundee United

Hearts midfielder Brodie Greenwood has moved to fellow SWPL1 side Dundee United for the rest of the season.

The 17-year-old joined the Edinburgh club in the summer after leaving Aberdeen upon the expiry of her contract. After making two starts this campaign against Hamilton and the Dons, Greenwood will now depart to seek more consistent game time at the Tangerines.

“Brodie has done very well since arriving at the club in the summer,” manager Eva Olid told Hearts “We can certainly see she has a great deal of potential. At 17, I still fully believe she will be an asset to our club for many years to come.

“Right now, we want to continue Brodie’s development. To do that, she must play as many first team games as possible. I believe this loan move gives Brodie the perfect opportunity to do just that.”

Greenwood is one of many players with high promise under Hearts’ books. The 17-year-old had been a regular for the Scotland Under 17’s accumulating 11 caps in just over a year. At the back end of last season, she also had a successful loan spell at St. Johnstone where she narrowly missed out on a SWPL promotion play-off spot. The aim now for the midfielder will be down the other end of the table as she looks to help Dundee United avoid relegation to the SWPL2. This challenge has already gotten off to a stunning start as Greenwood made her debut on Sunday off the bench to help the Tangerines see out a 5-3 victory against Hamilton.
