Due to the suspensions of Lagerbielke and Holm, another Celtic player is already looking over his shoulder.
Gustaf Lagerbielke and Odin Thiago Holm will both be unavailable for Celtic’s clash against Lazio after being sent off on Tuesday.
The Scandinavian pair, both signed this summer, were dismissed on their UEFA Champions League group stage debuts. Celtic went down 2-0 to Feyenoord on a night when ill-discipline and daft mistakes cost the side.
The red cards will also have an impact on our next match in the tournament — the visit of Lazio on October 4.
Article 52.01 of the UEFA Champions League regulations states that “a player or a team official sent off from the field of play and/or its immediate surrounds, including the technical area, is automatically suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition.”
UEFA can extend bans in the “case of serious offences” but that seems unlikely for either of our red cards. They don’t differentiate between straight reds and two bookings so both Lagerbielke and Holm face a one-match suspension.
With Nat Phillips and Cameron Carter-Vickers hopefully back by the time the Italians visit Glasgow, and Liam Scales performing well, we shouldn’t miss Lagerbielke too much. Holm, meanwhile, would be unlikely to start the game even if available.
Elsewhere, on the yellow card side, Callum McGregor is already looking over his shoulder. UEFA dishes out one-match suspensions once a player picks up three cautions.
The Celtic skipper was our only booking besides Lagerbielke in Rotterdam. If he picks up another two during our next four matches, or beyond that if we make the knockouts of either the Champions League or Europa League, he’ll be looking at sitting a game out too.
He would be a big miss.
