The most recent Elland Road update gives Leeds a significant boost ahead of their trip to Southampton – opinion
Leeds United will try to build on their recent success when they go to Southampton on Saturday.
The Whites picked up seven points from three games in the first week following the international break, but a trip to Southampton will be a step up in quality, regardless of their recent record.
Southampton have lost their previous four Championship games and have the league’s weakest defense, but they still have the quality to hurt Leeds.
Daniel Farke confirmed in his pre-match press conference he has no fresh injury worries going into the game, and will also be boosted by the return of Patrick Bamford.
Bamford is set to be part of the squad for the first time in a competitive match under Farke after picking up a hamstring injury in the final pre-season friendly of the summer.
Bamford return will be huge for Leeds
The 30-year-old has had a hard time over the last couple of years due to both form and fitness, but Leeds are now finally in a position where they can ease him back into action.
Georginio Rutter and Joel Piroe is very much Farke’s current first-choice front two, meaning Bamford will be tasked with playing more of an impact role.
Not only will this allow him to gradually build up match sharpness, but he will also provide Leeds with a quality option from the bench, particularly at this level.
Bamford has never had difficulty scoring goals at this level, but it is his off-the-ball movement and hold-up play that should make him a valuable substitute for Leeds.
There aren’t many better back-up attackers in the Championship than Bamford, so having him back in a situation where he doesn’t have to rush his return will be vital for Leeds.
