‘Unbelievable misreading,’ says Matt Canada of CBS’ Week 4 production meeting.

I've Never Placed Any Blame Anywhere But On Me:' Matt Canada Believes '1,000 Percent' In His Players - Steelers Depot

As the Steelers prepare for Week 5 against the Ravens, offensive coordinator Matt Canada was forced to defend his comments to CBS announcers last week.

Matt Canada, the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is having a bad season ahead of the team’s Week 5 matchup with its AFC North opponent, the Baltimore Ravens. Fans want him gone, social media is convinced he has a burner account, and last Sunday, CBS announcers stated he informed them the Steelers offensive isn’t “built” to come from behind. On Thursday, Canada cleared the air on that last point.

The Steelers were defeated 30-6 by the Houston Texans in Week 4. After the Steelers fell behind, CBS announcer Spero Dedes quoted the Steelers’ offensive coordinator to his color analyst, Adam Archuleta.

“One thing Matt Canada himself told us yesterday at their hotel: They’re not quite built to come back from big leads,” Dedes remarked during the broadcast, as the Steelers trailed 13-0. “And so the way they start games [is] so critical [with a] young quarterback.”

“I’m glad you asked that question,” Canada said before starting into a two-minute diatribe about it. He stated that his chat with Dedes and Archuleta was about why the Steelers ran more and used more play-action against the Las Vegas Raiders than they did when trailing the San Francisco 49ers by two touchdowns.

“You’re not going to stick to your running plan and play-action plan when you’re down three scores.” We only care about winning here. So the conversation was that, at the time, the strategy was not designed to achieve that. Canada explained, “Obviously, I believe we were going to win until the end.” “At no point was that conversation meant in that regard.”

“I certainly believe [Spiro Dedes] knew that,” the Steelers offensive coordinator continued. If not, it was obviously misinterpreted. But, of all the things we want to speak about and say, I never doubt our players, never doubt where we are, and never doubt our ability to return. Without a doubt.”

Pittsburgh has a bye week following Sunday’s game against the Ravens, so with all the heat on Matt Canada right now — whether his comments were taken out of context or not — head coach Mike Tomlin may make a change if the Steelers offense doesn’t perform better on Sunday.
