Reo Hatate thinks he is determined to meet Brendan Rodgers’ challenges and advance to the next level under his leadership.

In his side’s weekend victory over Kilmarnock, the Japanese ace was back to his daring best, with a performance that delighted both the fans and his boss. Hatate raced back to life with a lightning-quick drag and flick of the ball to set sail for the game’s first goal.

After marking David Watson, the silky playmaker surged towards Derek McInnes’ defense and sold another dummy to build a gap before hammering into the net. Celtic’s victory did not come as a surprise. Hatate’s season took off with a bang. According to his own admission, the 25-year-old has not had the ideal start to his campaign. Hatate suffered an injury after being pulled out of the starting lineup by his new coach for the first two games. He was out for a month.

When he returned, the gifted midfielder was still unable to find his top gear as he worked to regain full health. But Hatate’s brilliance in the opening against Killie, as well as his first goal of the season from open play, seemed to spark him. His delight at landing such a remarkable strike was palpable, and he bloomed from that second on to provide a magnificent performance.

He was suddenly back to his dominant best. Off-the-ball breaks into offensive areas, body power when forced to hold onto possession under pressure from Killie midfielders, awareness to glide clear, and brilliant touches were all on display.

Hatate felt he’d won a penalty after collapsing after a Watson challenge, but the first award was overruled by referee Matthew MacDermid after a VAR review. After a break into the area, the Asian had one effort stopped by desperate last-ditch defence by stopper Lewis Mayo, and another blocked by Killie keeper Will Dennis after a sweeping strike from outside the box.

However, as much as his talent flashed, it was his application that thrilled Rodgers as much as his artistry. Hatate’s pursuit of possession in the dying stages of the game, directly in front of the gaffer’s technical area, demonstrated that he’d heeded the coach’s advice. Rodgers said after the Killie victory that he had sat with Hatate in the aftermath of Lazio’s Champions League loss and gone through crucial aspects of his game. The manager discussed intensity with him and laid out the expectations.

Hatate instantly answered, stating that he is willing to follow all guidelines in order to achieve Rodgers’ desired levels. “He’s given me a personal challenge, or even for us all as a team,” he explained.

It’s a new method of working with him that I’m really enjoying.” Naturally, after being signed by Ange Postecoglou, any player can take their time learning the methods of a new manager. “Working under different managers can always be difficult,” Hatate remarked, “but I just want to put in my performance, whoever the manager is.”
