Ipswich Town midfielder Lee Evans avoids surgery set to be out for 'weeks' with knee injury

Lee Evans is set for a spell on the sidelines, with the midfielder due to undergo knee surgery today.

The 29-year-old suffered the injury during Saturday’s game at Huddersfield, forcing him off the field in the second half.

Scans have shown he has suffered an MCL injury, with surgery meaning several months on the sidelines.

“Lee Evans, unfortunately, has an injury on his MCL and he’s going to have a surgery,” Manager Kieran McKenna said, following Tuesday night’s game with Hull.

“Everyone’s really disappointed for Lee because he is a really important player and person for us, so we wish him well.

“He’s had the issue a couple of times and hasn’t had the surgical repair, so we’re confident this will now set him on a better path and he can fully recover and set him up for the next few years of his career.”

The Welsh international – who has four goals and one assist to his name already this season – sat out last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Huddersfield with a thigh problem and was an unused sub during Tuesday night’s 3-0 home win against Hull.

In his absence, Omari Hutchinson and Marcus Harness have both put in excellent performances on the inside left of the Town attack.

“Tuesday came around a little bit too quick for him,” said Blues boss Kieran McKenna, when asked about Broadhead at this afternoon’s pre-match press conference.

“He was medically clear but hadn’t trained too much. He was available for the bench but it was always going to be the case that we’d use him if we felt like we needed to.

“He trained yesterday and today, so he’s a little bit further down the line than he was before Tuesday.”

Asked whether anyone else had picked up injuries in midweek, McKenna replied: “No, we’re in a good spot. Apart from Lee (Evans), we’ve had the whole group training today, so we’re in a really healthy position.”

Midfielder Evans underwent knee surgery on Wednesday.

“It’s not a two-to-three-month injury and it’s not a year – could can be anything inbetween,” said McKenna.

“Let’s see, I think the most important thing is that he takes whatever time he needs to get it right now.

“He’s got some good years ahead of him as a player, we think, and he’s had a lot of experience up to this point in his career and hopefully this is a pause point to get it really right and then push on for the next few seasons.”
