Cantwell was heavily linked with a move to Leeds United back in the summer of 2020
Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell has opened up on almost joining Leeds United back in the summer of 2020 under Marcelo Bielsa.
Cantwell, at the time, was held in high regard in the Premier League after impressing for Norwich City in the 2019/20 season, despite the Canaries’ relegation to the Championship.
Having come through the club’s academy, Cantwell emerged as a key player for current Leeds boss Daniel Farke as the German boss guided Norwich to promotion from the Championship.
He then impressed in the top flight and became a regular for England u21s and there was a lot of interest from Premier League clubs after he dropped back down to the second tier.
One of those clubs was Leeds, who were reported to be working on a deal to sign Cantwell, thought to be worth around £15million. And Cantwell has now admitted that Leeds’ interest was legitimate and a move almost materialised.
He told The Beautiful Game podcast, Cantwell said: “It was close and it was concrete but that’s something I won’t go into the details of. There’s a lot of people that still work within these clubs and you never know when your paths are going to cross.
“For whatever reason they didn’t come to an agreement. It wasn’t to do with me, it was to do with the clubs. The conversations were real and the interest was definitely real though.”
Cantwell fell out of favour at Norwich after Farke left the club but after a tough period, he is now rebuilding his career in the Scottish Premiership and enjoying Europa League football with Rangers.
