Kenny Pickett of the Steelers will practice and is expected to play against the Ravens despite an injury.
Kenny Pickett of the Pittsburgh Steelers will practice on Wednesday and will be evaluated ahead of Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin provided an update on Pickett’s status on Tuesday, following NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo’s report on Monday that the quarterback escaped an ACL injury based on preliminary testing.
Garafolo and Ian Rapoport subsequently claimed that the injury was a bone bruise, which implies that the “door is open” for him to play against the Ravens on Sunday. Pittsburgh, on the other hand, has a bye the next week and could choose to rest him for several weeks.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via ESPN’s Brooke Pryor) also said that Pickett was “not expected to miss much, if any, time” and that the quarterback could “push the issue
to take on Baltimore.
Pickett was hurt in the second half of Pittsburgh’s Week 4 game against the Houston Texans. He was ruled out for the rest of the game and was replaced by former Chicago Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky.
While Trubisky is a seasoned NFL quarterback, there was excitement surrounding Pickett heading into the season.
Even though he struggled as a rookie with seven touchdown throws and nine interceptions, the 2022 first-round pick showed promise at times. Then, in his second year, he impressed throughout preseason, implying that he might be turning a corner.
Despite this, he has been inconsistent in his second season, completing 60.6 percent of his attempts for 803 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions in four games.
Attention now turns to Trubisky with Pickett potentially sidelined for a spell. He failed to live up to expectations with the Bears, but he can at least make plays with his arm and legs while keeping the team afloat in the short term.
