Alvaro Morata issues a warning to Celtic as he threatens to shoot down Hoops and ignores concerns about the tense atmosphere.
The Spain striker helped break Scottish hearts last week in Seville
Atletico Madrid and Spain striker Alvaro Morata plans to down his second Scottish side in as many weeks as his Atleti side travel to Glasgow for their Champions League clash against Celtic on Wednesday.
The former Real Madrid, Juventus and Chelsea attacker struck first for his national side last Thursday as they delayed Scotland’s Euro 2024 party in Seville and wants to add to his tally with a double against Brendan Rodgers’ men.
Celtic are still searching for their first points in the Champions League this season following their disappointing late defeat at Parkhead against Lazio last time out, while a win for Atleti on Wednesday would put them on seven after the first round of fixtures. Morata stated that although the Bhoys are pointless from their first two games, their need for a victory in order to progress in European competition this season could make them a more difficult opponent.
He said: “I want to follow up the goal I scored against Scotland as that was a key moment in the match. Would I like another goal in Glasgow this week? Yes – and two if possible. A win would bring a bit of calm for us because seven points from nine would be a great start.
“Atletico are the favourites but Celtic need to avoid defeat if they want to have any chance in Europe. That will see them make an extra effort but they also have more pressure on them.
Celtic go into the match looking for their first Champions League victory at Parkhead in ten years, but Morata insists that Atletico’s experience playing in some of the biggest venues in European football will help them silence the passionate Celtic crowd.
He added: “Celtic, with their stadium, are always difficult opponents. We respect them as rivals and while it will be a hard match, it may not be beautiful.
“The atmosphere in the ground is not a negative for us. We are used to playing in venues with passion. And the fans Celtic are not violent. If we win in Glasgow it will be a big step. It’s not about the performance, it’s all about the result.
“The players Celtic have from Asia can create moments of danger. It won’t be the usual style of Scottish football for this game. We will need to work hard to get the points.”
