Braves News: Former Atlanta catcher emerges as a favorite for a managerial position

It seems like the Atlanta Braves organization produces successful coaches and managers at the Major League level. As talks are heating up, another former Bravo just may be the skipper of a big league ball club.

Four teams are searching for a new manager as we enter this off-season. While the Guardians, Mets, Giants, and Angels fill their openings, the Atlanta Braves are hoping to hold onto Ron Washington. A former player for the Braves is being pursued by one of these four teams.

According to Jeff Passan, Stephen Vogt—who spent 2021 as a player with the Atlanta Braves and owns a World Series ring—has become a strong contender for managing the Cleveland Guardians.

Vogt was an outfielder, first baseman, and catcher for the Oakland A’s for six seasons during the bulk of his playing career. In 2015 and 2016, he appeared in two All-Star games for the A’s. Being a catcher and being able to play several positions could be a great combination for a successful manager.

Vogt, a catcher in charge of calling pitches, devoted a lot of time to learning how to read situations and react appropriately. He needed to be aware of the hitter’s advantages and disadvantages, his pitcher’s best stuff, and how opponents think. That is precisely what a manager must accomplish.

Following ten years of major league play, Stephen Vogt appears to be a strong contender for a managerial role. Despite being only 38 years old, he has played in the modern era of baseball. Because of his youth relative to most managers, he was able to forge relationships with his players that could lead to significant success.

The process of considering Vogt for this managerial role reminds me a lot of David Ross’s job interviews before he was hired by the Chicago Cubs. If the Guardians decide to make Vogt their next captain, they will be pleased with this addition.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise if Vogt is given consideration for any coaching positions available throughout the league in the event that he is not chosen to lead the Guardians.
