Steelers sign LB, TE to practice squad, host workouts Tuesday
Linebacker Caleb Johnson and tight end Scotty Washington are the latest additions to the Steelers’ practice squad.
Tuesday was very busy for the Steelers. The organization made the announcement today that they have added tight end Scotty Washington and linebacker Caleb Johnson to their practice squad. As a corresponding roster move, offensive lineman Obinna Eze and tight end Noah Gindorff were released.
Seven guys, including Johnson and Washington, who were later signed, were also worked out by Pittsburgh. The other candidates were linebackers Darryl Johnson, Vi Jones, Aubrey Miller, and Charles Snowden; tight end E.J. Jenkins was also mentioned, according to NFL source Aaron Wilson.
Wilson said that defensive back Rachad Wildgoose will eventually be worked out by the Steelers.
Regarding the newcomers, Caleb Johnson originally signed a contract as an undrafted free agent with the New York Jets after the 2023 NFL Draft. The 6’1″, 235-pound linebacker attended UCLA and Miami for his collegiate career. Johnson finished 2022 as a Hurricane with 48 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles.
After going undrafted in 2020, Scotty Washington, a former wide receiver, switched to tight end and has been in the league ever since. Regarding the exercises, Jenkins used to be a wide receiver but moved to play tight end. After the 2023 NFL Draft, he signed as a UDFA with the Jets. At Georgia Tech, the 6’7, 243-pound pass-catcher finished his collegiate career with 17 catches for 316 yards.
The Buffalo Bills selected Darryl Johnson, a seventh-round selection from North Carolina A&T in 2019. Throughout his NFL career, the 6’6, 253-pound defender has earned 34 total tackles and two sacks. He has played for the 49ers, Bills, Panthers, and Seahawks.
Jones, a 2022 UDFA out of NC State, inked a contract with the Seahawks. The 6’2, 225-pound pass-rusher totaled 45 tackles and six sacks in his final season of college.
Miller, out of Jackson State, was selected by the Miami Dolphins as a UDFA in 2023. In his final season at Jackson State, the 6’0, 229-pound linebacker registered 65 total tackles, two sacks, and four forced fumbles during his six years of collegiate football play.
After the 2021 NFL Draft, the Bears signed Snowden as a UDFA. At Virginia, where he played collegiate football, he finished his senior year with 44 total tackles, 6 sacks, and 1 forced fumble. The majority of the 2022 season was spent by the 6’6″, 232-pound linebacker on the practice squad of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Wisconsin native Wildgoose was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. During his three-year tenure as a Badger, Wildgoose racked up 57 total tackles, 14 passes defensed, and one interception. Wildgoose has played for the Commanders, Jets, and Bills in the NFL. The 5’11, 197-pound corner played in 15 games for Washington in 2022, tallying 16 tackles and three interceptions.
