Ex-NFL player Mike Williams dies after construction site accident
“He fought hard his whole life. Prayers to his family.”.
Mike Williams, a former wide receiver for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Buffalo Bills, has died, the Buccaneers announced Tuesday. He was 36.
Williams had been hospitalized in the Tampa area after he was injured while performing electrical work, his agent told NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. “He will be missed,” Enter Sports Management’s Hadley Engelhard said. “He fought hard his whole life. Prayers to his family.”.
Williams was involved in an accident at a construction site. Last week, reports created an impression that he had died in the incident. Subsequent reporting by several news outlets indicated Williams was on life support.
Williams played at Syracuse and led the team with 461 receiving yards as a true freshman in 2006. He was an all-Big East player the following season.
A fourth-round selection by Tampa Bay in 2010, he led the Buccaneers with 964 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns that season and finished second to St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford in voting for offensive rookie of the year honors. After he scored nine touchdowns and had 996 receiving yards in 2012, the Buccaneers signed him to a six-year, $40.25 million contract.
Williams was traded to the Bills in 2014 and spent one season with the team. His NFL career ended in 2016, when he spent part of the offseason with the Kansas City Chiefs.
