The Pittsburgh Steelers Lose Starting Linebacker for the Rest of the 2023 Season.
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting linebacker Cole Holcomb suffered a gruesome knee injury in the first quarter of the Steelers’ 20-16 victory over the Titans on Thursday night. He was carted off the field and went to a local hospital. Holcomb is expected to get surgery on his knee and will miss the rest of the season.

Holcomb committed to play college football at North Carolina as a walk-on in 2015. Holcomb appeared in every game, primarily on special teams and playing a little at linebacker, recording 15 tackles in his freshman season.
Holcomb started in every game of his sophomore season, recording 115 tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack, and five pass deflections.
He started the first eleven games of his junior season, recording 93 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 0.5 sacks, and three pass deflections. He missed the last game of the season due to an injury. He returned to North Carolina for his senior season.
He started in all 11 games of his senior season, recording 104 tackles, eight tackles for loss, one sack, four pass deflections, and four forced fumbles. He earned second-team ALL-ACC honors. He declared for the 2019 NFL Draft.
Holcomb would be selected in the 2019 draft.
The Washington Redskins drafted Cole Holcomb in the 5th round, 173rd overall in the 2019 draft. Holcomb started in 15 games in his rookie season, recording 105 tackles, six tackles for loss, one sack, two quarterback hits, one pass deflection, and three forced fumbles.
Holcomb suffered a patella sprain in Week 1 and missed the next four games. He also missed Week 14 with a concussion in his second season. He recorded 72 tackles, six tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, four quarterback hits, one interception, and one pass deflection.
Holcomb missed Week 16 because he tested positive for COVID-19 in his third season. He recorded 142 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, two quarterback hits, two interceptions, seven pass deflections, and two forced fumbles.
Holcomb started the first seven games of the season before he injured his foot. He underwent surgery, and Washington placed him on injured reserve on December 5, 2022. He recorded 69 tackles, one tackle for loss, one quarterback hit, and one pass deflection.
Holcomb signed with Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh and Holcomb agreed to a 3-year, $18 million contract on March 16, 2023. Holcomb started the first eight games, recording 54 tackles, four tackles for loss, two quarterback hits, two pass deflections, and two forced fumbles.
Who will replace Holcomb?
Expect Holcomb to be replaced by Kwon Alexander. Alexander has 631 tackles, 54 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks, 31 quarterback hits, nine interceptions, 34 pass deflections, and 12 forced fumbles in his nine-year career. When healthy, Kwon is a very reliable linebacker.
