Green Bay Packers President Makes Announcement Regarding Jordan Love's Future Amid 2-5 Start

The Green Bay Packers stared their 2023 campaign off on a high note.  After three games the Packers were 2-1 and were just one fourth-quarter collapse away from starting 3-0.  The team was riding high and feeling good about their potential.

However, since then the Packers have lost four straight games and the offense has been struggling mightily.  One of the offense’s biggest concerns is their inability to stay on the field.  In last week’s game against Minnesota, the Packers converted just 5-of-14 (35.7 percent) third downs. The first four possessions of the game ended in three-and-outs, meaning four consecutive third-down failures. Jordan Love has the third-lowest third-down passer rating in the NFL at 57.9.

Green Bay Packers Head Coach Makes Significant Announcement About Jordan Love

That is something that needs to change if this team wants to string together some wins in 2023.  Packers President Mark Murphy was asked about Jordan Love and what his future currently looks like with the team.

Green Bay Packers President Comments on Jordan Love’s Future

It is hard for even Mark Murphy, the president and CEO of the Green Bay Packers, to understand the potential Jordan Love has for the franchise:

What are your thoughts on Jordan Love? I know you said that it would take at least eight games to determine if he is our quarterback of the future. Is he our quarterback of the future?

That’s the million-dollar question, Jim. As a person, Jordan is everything you would want in a player – hard worker, smart, humble, a leader who is respected by his teammates. He is also willing to take the blame when things don’t go well.

His play has been up and down, though. Young players often take time to find consistency, but we still very much believe in Jordan and are excited to see his continued development. In 2008, after eight games we had seen enough of Aaron Rodgers to sign him to a contract extension.

Aaron was in a much different situation, though, as we had good veteran receivers in Donald Driver and Greg Jennings, a quality left tackle in Chad Clifton and a good running game with Ryan Grant. Jordan, meanwhile, is facing a much different situation with young receivers and tight ends, no David Bakhtiari and a struggling run game. It wouldn’t be fair to judge Jordan now since there are so many other factors that have contributed to the offense’s poor performance (e.g., dropped passes, penalties, mental errors).

We should have a much better sense regarding Jordan at the end of the season. In the NFL, quarterback is the most important position, but also the hardest position to play.

The Packers Will Likely Give Jordan Love 2024 To Prove Himself

The Packers invested a first-round draft pick in Love with the hopes he would be the next great quarterback for the franchise.  To give up on him after one season when there’s many other aspects of the team not performing at a high level would be bad business.

Love has shown flashes at times that he can play at an extremely high level and he has earned the respect of his teammates.  Those are two aspects that the front office can’t ignore.  Additionally, in one off-season the Packers became one of the youngest and most inexperienced teams in the NFL.  Allowing this young core of offensive playmakers to develop for a few years could bode extremely well for the long-term success of this team.

No matter the end result of the 2023 season, I would expect Jordan Love back in Green Bay next year to prove that he can still lead this franchise successfully.
