This season, no two players on the new Orleans Saints roster have experienced more ups and downs than quarterback Derek Carr and second-year wide receiver Chris Olave.

Following a 24-17 win over the Chicago Bears, the Saints improved to 5-4 and atop the NFC South, but there appeared to be some turbulence developing for Carr’s offense not long ago.

As the struggles continued during a five-game losing streak, the veteran quarterback expressed frustration over instances when the offense failed to get the “little details” right at critical points in a game.

At times, it appeared as if Carr and his receivers weren’t on the same page.

When Carr yelled at Olave after a failed connection during the Saints’ loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, it reinforced the notion that the new Saints quarterback and his receivers were struggling to establish chemistry on the field.

Olave was arrested for reckless driving a day after the loss after police said he was going twice the speed limit in Kenner.

The next day, Olave complained of his treatment on social media.

Last week, the Ohio State product acknowledged that he was “in a slump” headed into the win over the Bears.

After Olave pulled in six passes for 46 yards and a touchdown against the Bears, the Saints are hoping the second-year pro can shake out of his recent funk.

On Sunday, Carr went in-depth when discussing Olave and where the wide receiver stands in his eyes.

“He’s a young player. This is another thing that I think is a problem in this league, we don’t give young guys a chance to grow and develop, and go through their process,” Carr said after the Bears game. “He’s developing into what I think is going to be a tremendous player for a long time.

“The city of New Orleans should be very happy to have Chris as one of their starting receivers because he’s the ultimate pro, he loves football. He’s a great teammate. He does anything you ever ask him. Sometimes even when it’s the hard stuff, he goes in there and he does it. We called on him to put us in better field goal position. Boom, he comes up for us.”

Carr seems to be impressed by how Olave has responded to his recent struggles – on and off the field.

“To see him just continue to push through, there’s been things in my life that I’ve been through where no one even knows but you just keep pushing through,” Carr said. “When you see the fruits of it personally, it’s a good feeling.”

Olave appeared to be relieved by his nice showing against the Bears.

“Been through a rough month but God always comes through,” he said.
