Celtic fans feel confused after witnessing an Atletico Madrid tackle on Kyogo that was missed by VAR and wonder, ‘What’s the difference with Maeda?’

Atletico Madrid 6 Celtic 0 RECAP as Daizen Maeda gets 'very silly' red card verdict - Daily Record

The Hoops were incensed by the early red and this will raise further questions

Celtic and their fans were already scunnered with the sending off Daizen Maeda received this evening.

But eagle-eyed supporters have also now raised a similar tackle on Kyogo by an Atletico Madrid player which went unpunished and are asking ‘what’s the difference?’ Brendan Rodgers has hit out at the decision to give his man an early bath and says officials are treating VAR like it’s a computer game.

And pundits pretty much unanimously agreed that it was ‘incredibly harsh’. The decision will sting even more if the managers and others at the club become aware of the comparison fans have been throwing up with the tackle committed on Kyogo.

Rodgers and Martin O’Neill bemoaned the fact that the referee was shown a freeze frame of the Maeda tackle when reviewing it on the VAR monitor, and that made it look worse.

Well, if he’d been shown a similar image of the second incident then he would no doubt have reached the same conclusion but VAR didn’t intervene on this occasion and it went unpunished. The inconsistency of VAR has been under the microscope since it’s introduction and this would appear to be another example of that.

Supporters are also criticising their own side as they feel the Atletico player’s reaction helped earn Maeda his red card while known of the Hoops players showed those street smarts when they had the chance.

One wrote on social media: “Kyogo should be rolling on the ground and we should be surrounding the ref putting pressure on for a red card. All the top sides already do this so why not us.”

“Same tackle as Maeda”, said another. “Not one of players makes a fuss about it. Kyogo jumps up right away. We are way too nice.”

Another added: “Maeda showed studs for a fraction of a sec, still in control and on his feet. That boy slid in, out of control, studs showing, yet nothing. Difference is Kyogo didn’t roll about and his teammates didn’t pile in complaining.”
