COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football coach Ryan Day refuted Michigan’s reported assertion that his program shared its rivals’ play signals with Purdue prior to the 2022 Big Ten championship game.
Multiple outlets reported Tuesday that Michigan turned over to the Big Ten evidence that teams collaborated to give Purdue the Wolverines’ signals prior to the 2022 Big Ten championship game. According to ESPN, Ohio State provided offensive signals and Rutgers provided them for defense. Both teams played Michigan in November of last year.
Day was asked to respond to that report and clarify his understanding of what is within the rules in terms of sharing intel with other teams.
“I’m not going to get into all of that right now,” Day said. “But I can tell you this right now — that nobody here did any of that. We went through and made sure. We went and asked all the questions and got our compliance people involved, and none of that came back at all.
“So I can answer you very strongly that did not happen.”
When asked to clarify when he asked those questions and involved compliance, Day said he would make no further comment.
Michigan made that submission to the Big Ten in response to an investigation into — and possible punishment for — an alleged network of in-person scouting that broke NCAA rules. Both the NCAA and the Big Ten are conducting their own investigations into the actions of Connor Stalions, who resigned after the allegations surfaced.
Multiple outlets have reported details of Stalions’ network of in-person scouts. They reportedly attended over 30 games since 2021. He is alleged to have used them to obtain the sideline signals of future Big Ten and College Football Playoff opponents.
