The Michigan Wolverines’ biggest recruiting week of the college football season has arrived, with more than 50 recruits expected in Ann Arbour to witness sports’ greatest rivalry.
We’ll have more on those visitors later this week, but there’s still plenty of recruiting news to talk about, such as the father of a recent commit explaining why he chose Michigan and a 2025 four-star tight end target wanting to return for a visit.

Dan Smith, the father of recent 2025 four-star quarterback commit Carter Smith, spoke with EJ Holland ($) of The Wolverine about why his son wanted to play at Michigan.
“(Quarterbacks) Coach (Kirk) Campbell had been in touch for quite some time. “He saw him throw a couple of times,” said Smith’s father. “We went, and when we arrived, it was more than we expected and better than we expected.” Everything about the culture, the atmosphere inside the building, the people at the restaurants and M Den store, and everything else around there was truly unique. We obviously had a good time.”
When they returned from their trip, Dan asked Carter if Michigan was “the spot” despite the fact that it was “cold up there and 1,200 miles away” from their hometown of Fort Myers, Florida.
Carter, who ranks 221st in his class, 16th among quarterbacks, and 31st among Floridians on the 247Sports composite, will play for Campbell, and his father is excited about the prospect after seeing what they saw during their visit.
“We were able to sit in the quarterback meeting, which was incredible,” Dan went on to say. “I admire how he handles his quarterbacks and communicates with the boys.” He’s doing an excellent job with J.J. and the other quarterbacks. I am confident that Coach Campbell and Coach (Jim) Harbaugh will be able to turn things around.
He also praised J.J. McCarthy and his family, who clearly care deeply about the school.
“They are the same kid,” Dan said about Carter and J.J. “We were sitting in Harbaugh’s office when J.J. walked in. He sat down with us for about 15 minutes. I had the opportunity to meet Jim and Megan McCarthy. They were fantastic. They raved about the programme. I was surprised. I thought, ‘This guy’s going to the NFL, and they’ll be long gone,’ but they were so into the programme. It completely blew me away. It revealed to me the types of people who frequent the area.”
Smith, a four-star cornerback, is the third Michigan commit in the 2025 class.
