Celtic pay tribute to Shane MacGowan with Matchday tracks
On a bitterly cold night under the lights at Celtic Park, the Scottish Champions put Hibernian to the sword, winning 4-1. However, Celtic were also able to pay tribute to Shane MacGowan, who tragically died last week.
MacGowan, who was the legendary frontman of The Pogues, died in Dublin aged 65. The singer was a big Celtic supporter and his connection with the club was recognised by the Celtic Park DJ, who took their opportunity to pay homage to MacGowan with two tracks.
Fairytale of New York was played at half-time, which at this time of year isn’t too surprising. Although, there was an added poignancy given the passing of MacGowan.
Then, after John Beaton sounded the final whistle for full time, The Celtic Song as performed by MacGowan was played.
Celtic have used Fiesta by The Pogues as a goal song for a number of years but tonight’s inclusion of the two tracks were clearly a nod to the great man. May he rest in peace.

Speaking following the game, Rodgers told Sky Sports that the central defender was substituted after feeling tightness in his hamstring and that it was just a precaution.
“It was just a precaution. He felt his hamstring was a little bit tight. He wanted to continue but there was no point in risking it when we had a centre-half on the bench.”
Carter-Vickers missed a portion of the beginning of the season with a hamstring injury and recurrence of that injury would be a major blow given his importance to the team. Phillips came off the bench and looked rusty but earlier in the week, Rodgers said that he had been training well ahead of Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke.
Greg Taylor also went off but Rodgers clarified that this wasn’t an injury and he had been struggling with a bout of flu during the week but wanted to play. The Scotland Internationalist was impressive before being substituted for Tony Ralston in the
second half.
