New York reportedly signed a former member of the Red Sox

One former member of the Boston Red Sox organization reportedly has found a new home with the New York Yankees.

New York has been extremely busy this offseason and seemingly has made star-studded moves left and right. Although most of the speculation involving the Yankees this offseason has involved superstars, the club still is looking to improve depth in the organization, as well.

The Yankees entered the offseason with exceptional minor league pitching depth but has seen it depleted fast after trades with the Red Sox as well as the San Diego Padres. Plus, the Rule 5 Draft didn’t help.

New York is looking to add more depth with upside and reportedly signed former Red Sox lefty Oddanier Mosqueda to a minor league contract, according to Beyond The Monster’s Chris Henrique.

“Former (Worcester Red Sox) lefty Oddanier Mosqueda has signed a minor league deal with the New York Yankees, per his IG story,” Henrique said.

Red Sox reportedly linked to former All-Star, veteran righty

Mosqueda has been with the Red Sox organization since 2016 and has worked his way up the farm system. The 24-year-old spent the 2023 campaign with the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox and logged a 5.31 ERA across 48 outings. Mosqueda compiled a 74-to-39 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 61 innings pitched.

The lefty has a career 4.21 ERA in seven professional seasons and at one point seemed like he was going to be part of the Red Sox’s big league bullpen. If he were more consistent last season, he likely would’ve made the jump. Mosqueda didn’t make the big league club out of spring training and didn’t get fully on track.

It wouldn’t be too surprising to see Mosqueda make his big league debut next season with New York.

Multiple Players Being Sent To Yankees To Create 40-Man Roster Space

The Los Angeles Dodgers didn’t make a splash during the Winter Meetings in Nashville, but the weekend brought about big news with Shohei Ohtani announcing he was signing a 10-year, $700 million contract with the team.

Ohtani signing with the Dodgers is all but a formality, though the deal is not yet official. Part of the delay is Ohtani needing to undergo a physical and the Dodgers also needing to create room on their 40-man roster as well.

That additionally applies to Joe Kelly, who agreed to a one-year contract for the 2024 season at the beginning of the month.

With the Dodgers needing to make room on their 40-man roster for the signings of Kelly and Ohtani, they are on the verge of completing a trade with the New York Yankees, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic:

Part of the Dodgers’ 40-man roster becoming full was due to decisions with their arbitration-eligible players and also protecting Nick Frasso, Landon Knack and Hunter Feduccia from potentially being taken in this year’s Rule 5 Draft.

Re-signing Jason Heyward was the most recent transaction the Dodgers officially completed, which brought their 40-man roster full.

With the Dodgers looking to free up room on their 40-man roster and plenty of depth in the bullpen, Victor González could be a prime candidate to get traded to the Yankees. Bryan Hudson is another possibility and Gus Varland may be a Dodgers trade chip as well.

On the position player side, Jonny DeLuca would help solve the Yankees’ need for a defensive upgrade in their outfield in the wake of trading for Juan Soto.

Additional Dodgers prospects who could get traded include Michael Busch, Jorbit Vivas, Andy Pages and Ricky Vanasco. Though, Vanasco was re-signed this offseason to a Major League contract after joining the team on a Minor League deal earlier in the year.
