Just a Minute: Two Alabama Signees Earn Fifth Star - Sports Illustrated Alabama Crimson Tide News, Analysis and More

The Alabama football team is bringing in one of the most talented secondary classes in the country.

Welcome to BamaCentral’s Just a Minute. Our daily video series keeping up with Alabama Crimson Tide athletics.

247Sports released its final rankings for the football Class of 2024 as National Signing Date is in two weeks.

Unfortunately Alabama lost two of its signees in the transition from Nick Saban to Kalen DeBoer. however the Crimson Tide still currently sits with the No. 3 class according to 247Sports with 23 players in the class.

For many, reranking the prospects is insignificant but for two Crimson Tide signees its a sign of the hard work they put in during their final season of high school football.

Defensive backs Zabien Brown and Zay Mincey were both elevated from 4-star prospects into 5-star prospects, giving the Crimson Tide three total 5-star prospects in the class when including defensive back Jaylen Mbakwe.

The talent additions in the defensive backfield are important for Alabama as the Tide endured significant losses in the transfer portal and to the upcoming NFL Draft. Alabama saw starting cornerbacks Kool-Aid McKinstry and Terrion Arnold both enter the draft, while key contributors Caleb Downs and Trey Amos both left Tuscaloosa by way of the portal.

Malachi Moore becomes the Tide’s most experienced player in the secondary and Saban was highly complimentary of the Hewitt-Trussville Husky last season for his ability to communicate and get the back-end on the same page.

While many are concerned with the talent lost in the offseason cycle it’s clear the former staff did quite a job finding young talent that’s capable of contributing.

In fact, on top of the three incoming 5-star freshman prospects the Tide pulled another former 5-star out of the transfer portal in Southern Cal cornerback Domani Jackson.
