Report: Yankees embark on a huge set-back

The latest on Yankees and Mets bullpen targets, including Hector Neris

With most of their offseason work completed, the Yankees and Mets remain engaged in the free agent bullpen market, and both have spoken with the representatives for former Phillies and Astros reliever Hector Neris, according to league sources.

Those sources pointed to the win-now Yankees as a more likely fit for the 34-year-old Neris, but also said that Neris had serious interest from clubs outside of New York. His asking price — which, according to sources, is for one or two years at $7-11 million per year — would also fit the Mets budget. That team is willing to spend roughly $10 million more on the roster this offseason, and potentially add to the payroll at the trade deadline if the Mets are in contention.

Given that the Yankees are all in on trying to win a World Series this year, Neris’ big-game experience in Houston and Philadelphia — and willingness to pitch in any inning that manager Aaron Boone sees fit — make him a natural for their roster. The same can be said for the gutsy lefty Wandy Peralta, who might still return to the Yankees, and who has also spoken with the Mets.

Adam Ottavino, who declined a $6.75 million option with the Mets for 2024, is a possibility to return to the Mets on a new contract.

Essentially, the Mets have spoken to the representatives of just about every available reliever, and still have money to spend in that area, if they see a fit.
