Another Assistant Coach Set To Leave Michigan Football
According to several sources, safeties coach and special teams coordinator Jay Harbaugh is set to depart Ann Arbor to join his father Jim in Los Angeles with the Chargers.
It’s not necessarily surprising that Jay is following Jim to LA and back to the NFL, but it is another loss as Jay had been with Michigan for a solid nine seasons. During his tenure at U-M, Harbaugh did a little bit of everything, including coaching running backs and tight ends, and just finished his second season as safeties coach and fourth as special teams coordinator. He’s always been billed as a solid recruiter and someone who can adapt and fill needs wherever they might be.
New head coach Sherrone Moore now has to deal with the departure of Jay Harbaugh, along with defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, strength and conditioning coach Ben Herbert and potentially others. He recently spoke on The Pat McAfee Show and gave a loose timeline for making new hires.
“The staff is staring to take shape — bit by bit — everyday,” Moore said. “I think by next week or so, we’ll have that in place.”
