Yankees lose a star to transfer, but they locate a replacement.

MLB Rumors: Gio Urshela Targeted By Yankees, Mets, Marlins amid 2024 Free Agency

A group of teams seeking infield depth are keeping an eye on Gio Urshela in free agency.

Per MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the New York Yankees, New York Mets and Miami Marlins have shown interest in the 32-year-old.

It’s been a slow offseason for many free agents, including top stars like Cody Bellinger, Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery and Matt Chapman.

Urshela has drawn some attention throughout the offseason, with the Mets and Yankees frequently connected to him. The Athletic’s Will Sammon reported on Dec. 31 that both New York teams had interest.

Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith reported the Toronto Blue Jays at one point had interest in Urhsela. It’s unknown if they still do after signing Isiah Kiner-Falefa to be their utilityman in 2024.

The Yankees know Urshela as well as any team in Major League Baseball. He spent three seasons in the Bronx from 2019 to ’21. He hit .310/.359/.523 with 27 homers and 104 RBI in 175 games over his first two seasons with the Yankees.

Urshela was traded to the Minnesota Twins in March 2022 as part of the Josh Donaldson deal. He spent one season with the Twins before getting traded to the Los Angeles Angels.

During his lone season with the Angels, Urshela hit .299/.324/.374 in 214 at-bats. He only played in 62 games due to a pelvis fracture suffered in a win over the Texas Rangers on June 15.

Urshela has been a third baseman for most of his career, though he has also played first base, second base and shortstop.

The Mets and Marlins could add Urshela as insurance if their current third baseman—Brett Baty and Jake Burger, respectively—struggle this season. The Yankees might want an insurance policy if either DJ LeMahieu or Anthony Volpe don’t perform up to expectations.
