Rangers’ Filip Chytil returning to New York in encouraging recovery sign
SAN JOSE, Calif. — Filip Chytil is one step closer to a potential return.
According to a league source, the Rangers’ center is on his way back to New York after a roughly three-week spell in his home country of Czechia recovering from a suspected concussion.
There is still no timetable on Chytil’s return to the lineup or when he’ll resume practicing with the team.
After the organization sent him home with hopes that a change of scenery would help, however, it’s a positive development in what first appeared to be a bleak situation.
Chytil will miss his 37th straight game when the Rangers take on the Sharks on Tuesday night at SAP Center.
He recently posted a photo on Instagram with Jaromir Jagr and personal coach Radek Duda in Czechia, the latest step in a recovery process that head coach Peter Laviolette described as a “different avenue.”
Filip Chytil is heading back to New York after spending time in Czechia following his suspected concussion.
“Fil is progressing slowly,” Laviolette said Dec. 30. “It’s an opportunity for him to head home, reset, continue to move forward. When he comes back, we’ll welcome him back with open arms.”
Chytil, who exited the Rangers’ win against the Hurricanes on Nov. 2, had compiled six assists — but no goals — through his first 10 games this season as he tried to build off the first 20-goal campaign of his career a year ago.
Under Gerard Gallant last year, Chytil found the most success centering Alexis Lafreniere and Kappo Kakko on the “Kid Line,” but the bulk of his ice time with Laviolette now coaching the Blueshirts occurred alongside Lafreniere and Artemi Panarin.
