According to Insider, the Yankees are unlikely to extend their superstar before free agency.
The position the New York Yankees are in is interesting.
Clearly, New York is throwing its weight behind the 2024 campaign. Superstar slugger Juan Soto was acquired by the Yankees earlier in the winter in a blockbuster trade with the San Diego Padres.
At barely 25 years old, Soto is already among baseball’s top players. According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Yankees may not be able to secure an extension before he hits free agency at the end of the 2024 season.
“The Yankees made a big deal to acquire Soto this offseason, and while it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the three-time All-Star spend the next decade in the Bronx, it seems like a stretch to believe an extension is in the cards,” Feinsand commented. “Soto will be targeting one of the biggest free-agent deals in history, and even if the Yankees choose to engage in extension talks, the slugger and his agent, Scott Boras, are unlikely to offer any discounts before free agency.”
While it seems unlikely that the Yankees will receive a reduction, it wouldn’t be shocking if they were to eventually reach an agreement with Soto.
One of the biggest contracts in Major Soto history is probably going to be awarded to Soto. Although the Yankees could afford to offer Soto a huge contract, it appears that he plans to exercise his right to free agency and explore his options.
It would be disastrous if Soto were to sign a free agent contract the following offseason and the Yankees failed to win the World Series in 2024.
