Quinn Ewers shocked the college football world when he announced in January that he would return to Texas for the 2024 season. Earlier this week, Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian stated there won’t be a quarterback competition this summer—Ewers will be the undisputed starter under center once again.

So, where does that leave highly anticipated quarterback Arch Manning? Is the transfer portal looking more tempting now that Manning will be a backup again next year?

His uncle, former NFL quarterback Eli Manning, believes the 18-year-old should remain exactly where he is.

“No,” Eli Manning responded when asked by Zach Gelb if his nephew should enter the transfer portal. “He picked Texas because that’s where he wants to be. That’s where he wants to play football. He likes Coach Sarkisian and his offense and what they’re doing.

“… Obviously, the plan was maybe Ewers would go into the NFL, but he’s there. It’s another year for Arch to mature, learn an offense, get bigger, stronger in the weight room and always be prepared to play. You never know what’s going to be happen.”

Manning was on the depth chart behind Ewers and Maalik Murphy while he redshirted last season. Now that Murphy transferred to Duke, Manning will be Texas’s No. 2 quarterback next season.

Eli Manning is confident that another campaign learning the ropes behind Ewers will do nothing but benefit his nephew.

“The fact that you can transfer so easily now doesn’t mean you should do it,” Manning said. “… I know he wants to play; he’s itching to get in there. But being patient and continuing to learn can be very helpful as well.”
