Yankees Are Doubtful To Sign Superstar Pitcher Despite Speculation
The New York Yankees could use one more major splash.
New York is in a better spot than it was at the end of the 2023 season and should be considered one of the top teams in the American League East. The Yankees are in a better place but still are chasing clubs like the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Yankees could use another starting pitcher before the 2024 campaign rolls around. New York has been linked to multiple hurlers and one player who has popped up is two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell.
A move certainly is unlikely. While this is the case, New York did offer him a contract earlier this offseason but didn’t get a deal done. Snell still is available and with each passing day, it’s even more unclear where he will land but a deal with the Yankees is unlikely, according to the New York Post’s Joel Sherman.
“The sense is (Scott Boras) has wanted to push Snell beyond $30 million annually and well beyond $200 million in total,” Sherman said. “The Yankees had talked earlier in the offseason conceptually about a six-year, $150 million deal. There has been reporting that no other team had made an offer as of a few weeks ago.
“So if that $200 million-plus deal never comes, could Boras and Snell pivot to, say, one that guarantees more than $30 million annually with the chance to go back into the free-agent market in each of the next two offseasons? Basically something in the three-year, $105 million neighborhood, like (Carlos Correa’s). Even if Snell did agree to such parameters, I would think the Yankees are doubtful to rejoin the fray now after signing Marcus Stroman.”
This doesn’t necessarily mean that the Yankees couldn’t rejoin the Snell sweepstakes, but a move likely won’t happen.
