Justin Fields trade: Chicago Bears must learn from New York Giants’ quarterback mistakes

he Chicago Bears are faced with an incredibly tough call this season. Mortgage their future to Justin Fields, their star quarterback with expert rushing skills, or trade him and gamble on improving the collective team, but they cannot make the same mistake as the New York Giants according to an NFL analyst.

Fields threw for 16 touchdowns in 2023 as he passed for 2562 yards on 370 attempts with a 61.4% completion rate and rushed for four more. His rushing TDs were down from eight in 2022 but his passing up by five.

At the tender age of 24, he’s eligible for his first multi-year extension and as a fifth-year NFL player, he’s also eligible for a $22m option for 2025 which the Bears must activate by May 2.

So after being chosen in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, the Bears, for 2024, have the first round pick again, so could they trade Fields whilst his stocks are high and gamble on another QB pulling through? Kurt Warners calls on them to learn from the Giants.

“When you get to the point we are at in this league with quarterbacks – what you have to pay them and what that means for your organization – you better know that he’s the guy,” NFL Network analyst Kurt Warner said at Super Bowl 2024. “That, to me, is where teams get in trouble.

“The Giants go give $40 million [per year] to Daniel Jones. He hasn’t shown us he’s that guy. We’ve seen glimpses, maybe. The Giants are still behind the 8-ball because he’s still not that guy. Maybe he will be, but he’s not right now – and they paid him.”

Who could Fields’ suitors be?

At the moment, the very top teams are all settled on their quarterbacks. The Philadelphia Eagles have Jalen Hurts, the Dallas Cowboys have Dak Prescott, the Kansas City Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes, the San Francisco 49ers have Brock Purdy and so on…

That means it’s likely to be a middle-of-the-pack team for Fields who he could potentially turn into contenders leaving candidates such as the Pittsburgh Steelers, Atlanta Falcons, Minnesota Vikings and Las Vegas Raiders.

Further options could be the Washington Commanders (despite having Sam Howell), the New England Patriots and the Giants themselves, ironically.
