After winning a national title just over a month ago, Michigan football fans are starting to look ahead to the 2024 campaign. Fans are wondering if Michigan can make another run in the playoffs now that the structure has changed to a 12-team field that includes the top seven-ranked teams in the standings and five conference champions.

Michigan will need to go above and beyond to make the playoffs given their difficult schedule, which includes games against three of ESPN’s top four teams for 2024. But their rigorous schedule also helps them to establish a stellar résumé.

Based on historical data, it appears that the cutoff for the top 12 is 9-3/10-2. With all the change, it’s hardly a given that Michigan football will easily defeat weaker opponents. However, the Wolverines would need to win at least three games, ideally four, against Texas, USC, Michigan State, Washington, Oregon, and Ohio State.

The good news, for Michigan, is that they get Texas, USC, Michigan State, and Oregon at home. If I were to guess right now, I’d give Michigan the edge against USC, MSU, and Washington, although playing at Washington is never easy.

Texas, Oregon, and Ohio State will all likely be favored against the Wolverines. To beef up its resume, I think that Michigan needs to win at least one of these games. If they can do that, the Wolverines should be in good shape to make the playoffs.

Looking at Michigan’s roster, they definitely have a playoff caliber team. Nobody is debating that. They return possibly the best defense in the country, featuring (possibly) the best cornerback in the nation, the best defensive line in the nation, and the best safety tandem in the nation.

The Wolverines should have a strong rushing game and offensive line this season, especially if quarterback Alex Orji, a preseason All-American tight end, is starting. Although the passing game’s design is unknown, this will be a fantastic offense if it has any life.

Perhaps the 2024 team has more star power than the 2023 team. Without a doubt, though, the Wolverines are capable of contending for a national title in 2024. The positions of wide receiver and quarterback continue to have the most questions. Michigan will be in excellent condition if they can hold those places.

Michigan’s schedule is ideal since it gives them lots of opportunities to establish themselves. In a few weeks, we will definitely know if this club is a title contender. Michigan will still be among the best in 2024 even if they sent a record amount of athletes to the NFL combine. Go, Blue!
