The head coach of the Tar Heels declared his resignation.
Hubert Davis Heaps Praise on UNC Basketball Senior for Historic Effort
Guard RJ Davis of UNC broke the previous record at the Dean E. Smith Center on Monday night when he scored 42 points to help the No. 9 Tar Heels (22-6, 14-3 ACC) defeat Miami (15-14, 6-12 ACC) 75-71. The fourth-year Tar Heel made 14 of 22 field goals, 7 of 11 shots from beyond the arc, and 7 of 9 shots from the charity stripe.
In his 35 minutes on the court, Davis, who is rapidly approaching admission into the 2,000-point club with 1,912 points after his career-high effort, added six rebounds, one assist, four steals, and just two turnovers. He achieved a first for the program by scoring 1,900 points, 200 three-pointers made, 500 rebounds, and 300 assists.
Completing the above list of career accomplishments with Monday night’s masterwork from the ACC Player of the Year front-runner is apt. In an analysis of the RJ Davis show, third-year UNC head coach Hubert Davis noted that the Tar Heels required his entire toolkit to fend off the Hurricanes’ relentless comeback attempts:
“It was fantastic for him to perform on a national platform in that manner. However, he has been playing this season with the kind of effort he had tonight—I know he hadn’t scored 42 points. He also carried the team on his back.
It extended beyond his arguments. He handled the basketball, disseminated the ball, grabbed rebounds, boxed out, and you know all of that, and I thought that was tremendous defense.
“Tonight, we required every last bit of his 42. After the game, I told him that while I’ve seen a lot of performances in the NBA and here at Carolina, very few have compared to what he did tonight.
