The 2024 college football season is anticipated by the Big 12 to be a highly competitive one. There isn’t a club that is the clear favorite or has an easy route to the conference final. Rather, a collection of schools that aren’t all that different from one another on paper are positioned for what could be a thrilling finish in November to decide which two teams will represent the Big 12 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

Although one team will undoubtedly go to the College Football Playoffs, the league will probably require two teams to stand out from the competition in order to receive an at-large bid into the 12-team field.

With the additions of Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Wyoming, the Big 12 now has 16 teams.

Is Willie Fritz able to replicate his success at Houston that he did at Tulane? Under their new head coach, the Cougars do not anticipate being much of a danger in Year 1, but the foundation is in place for future success. With games against most of the major contenders and a non-conference trip to Oklahoma, a former Big 12 member, Houston did not have a favorable schedule in the Big 12. The Cougars may have consecutive 4–8 overall seasons in their first season as a member of the Power Conference.

Cincinnati concluded the previous season with their lowest total victory total (3) in 24 years and won just one Big 12 game. The Bearcats may put together a winning run in the first part of the schedule, but three road games and home games against TCU and West Virginia are expected to seal a 0–5 finish. As a head coach in a major conference during the last five seasons, Scott Satterfield is 28-33 overall. Cincinnati’s chances of emerging as a Big 12 surprise team are little to none.

Arizona State, starting a new chapter in a new league, was handed one of the hardest schedules in the Big 12. The Sun Devils play top Big 12 competitor Kansas State on the road in a previously scheduled non-conference game in addition to their regular schedule of nine league games. Head coach Kenny Dillingham, in his second year, is working to address the roster problems left by the previous staff. 2024’s on-field performance might not reflect the advancements being made.

Deion Sanders may not get Colorado to a bowl game in Year 2, but the Buffaloes should show some signs of improvement while managing a return to the Big 12 in 2024. The non-conference slate presents a few challenges with matchups against FCS powerhouse North Dakota State followed by back-to-back road games at rivals Nebraska and Colorado State. Big 12 wins could be hard to come by for Colorado. However, a projected win versus Oklahoma State to close out the regular season would lessen the pain of not making the postseason.

The last time BYU experienced consecutive losing seasons was in the middle of the 2000s. As they continue to acclimate to life in a strong conference, the Cougars may be in risk of having that run stop in 2024. In its first year, BYU only emerged victorious in two Big 12 games. Given the difficulty of the schedule, which includes games against the majority of the top Big 12 contenders, Kalani Sitake probably has to pull off one or two shocks in Provo to reach that prior total.
