One former member of the New York Yankees begging to come back.
One former New York Yankee is still available in free agency. Since the 2023 season ended, there has been a lot of conjecture surrounding former Yankees pitcher Jordan Montgomery. Montgomery helped the Texas Rangers win the World Series after being traded from the St. Louis Cardinals. Since he became a free agent, he has been searching for a new place to call home, but he hasn’t been successful in closing a contract. Jim Bowden of The Athletic reports that while New York has surfaced as a potential destination, Montgomery doesn’t appear to be interested in getting back together just yet.
The Yankees have a great deal of faith in Blake Snell’s mound improvements from the previous season, which helped him win the National League Cy Young Award. because they believe Montgomery has a lower potential than him. It’s thought that Montgomery would prefer not to have a reunion with the Yankees, but that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t welcome him back. You can’t completely rule it out, though, unless he signs with another party.” The Yankees might find Montgomery to be a great fit, but a trade seems improbable. In the rotation, New York could still need a little assistance. At this point, Blake Snell and the Yankees have even been connected on few occasions.
It seems like the biggest reason why a move in general is unlikely is because of the cost. Montgomery would cost less than Snell, but it just doesn’t seem like something is going to happen. It’s unclear where Montgomery will land but he likely will sign soon. He has been linked to the Boston Red Sox as well on multiple occasions but a reunion with the Rangers could make sense too.
One former member of the New York Yankees still is out there in free agency. Montgomery was traded from the St. Louis Cardinals to the Texas Rangers and helped lead the club to the World Series. He entered free agency and has been looking for his next home ever since but hasn’t been able to land a deal yet. New York has popped up as a possible option, but at this point, it seems like Montgomery isn’t interested in a reunion, according to The Athletic’s Jim Bowden. “The Yankees really believe in the adjustments that (Blake Snell) made last year on the mound, which led to him winning the (National League) Cy Young Award. and they think he has a higher ceiling than Montgomery. “That doesn’t mean they wouldn’t necessarily bring back Montgomery, but it’s believed that he does not prefer a reunion with the Yankees. However, you can’t rule it out until he signs somewhere else.” Montgomery could make a lot of sense for the Yankees, but a move certainly sounds very unlikely.
