Bengals Sign Massive OT Trent Brown After An Amazing Free Agency Move
Trent Brown, who signed a one-year contract with the Bengals on Tuesday, helped the team secure the largest book-end tackles in the NFL. He was endorsed by Ted Karras, his former New England teammate.
The 6-8, 380-pound Brown, the most experienced offensive player for the Bengals, is expected to make his 94th start on Opening Day when he lines up at right tackle opposite 6-8, 340-pound Orlando Brown Jr.
The move now opens the way for the 18th pick in the NFL Draft, which takes place next month. Brown is only signed for one year, but tackle is still a desirable option because the position is as deep as it has been in years.
Brown, who was selected by the 49ers in the seventh round of the 2015 NFL Draft, has experience playing both tackle positions. He earned a ring in 2018 by playing every action in the Patriots’ Super Bowl triumph over the Rams, which was LA quarterbacks coach Zac Taylor’s final game before he was hired as the Bengals head coach. His 100 games have been primarily at right tackle.
“I’ll be able to plug-and-play on the right side,” Brown stated upon his visitation, having landed in Cincinnati around midnight. “It’s a no-brainer to be here with this group and to be able to play next to a great guard like Alex Cappa.”
Along with that, he reunites with Karras, his new center and fellow 2018 Pat.
Karras added, “That means we’ll have four of the five guys on the offensive line who won have won Super Bowls,” alluding to Cappa’s success in Tampa Bay and Orlando Brown’s victory with the Chiefs. “We need another one.”
“Among the greatest guys I’ve ever had the honor of playing with. When questioned, I have supported him,” Karras remarked. “He is an elite athlete. He is aware of what it takes to succeed. For someone so large and agile, he must be an incredible athlete. He is incredibly powerful. a man with extensive football experience. 7th round selection in the draft. climbed the ranks in this league. It’s always nice to catch up with an old acquaintance. a man you have a relationship with. I find it exciting. And we will have a complete line when we enter the draft.”
In the five Opening Days that Brown has started at right tackle, he will be the most seasoned player and the sixth different veteran to start there. The only players on the offense with 100 NFL game appearances are Brown and Karras.
Karras leads the club in games played with 126, followed by Vonn Bell, the recently inked safety, with 122. Trent Brown has made 100 appearances.
