Seattle Mariners’ rookie Emerson Hancock earned his first career big league win on Monday night as the M’s beat the Cleveland Guardians, 5-4, at T-Mobile Park.

Hancock, who is in the starting rotation because of an injury to Bryan Woo, went 5.1 innings, surrendering three earned runs on four hits. He walked one and struck out one.

The former first-round pick made his Major League debut last season but only made three appearances because of a season-ending shoulder injury. He figures to be a big part of what the M’s do this year, serving as the best depth option for the starting rotation. He is currently the organization’s No. 11 ranked prospect, per MLB.com.

With the win, he also made some fun and zany baseball history, accomplishing something that hasn’t been done in more than five years in the American League.

Seattle was propelled in the win by Hancock’s pitching, as well as a three-run home run by Dom Canzone. Seattle’s newest reliever, Ryne Stanek, also picked up his first M’s save.

Seattle is now 3-2 on the season while Cleveland dropped to 3-2 as well.

The two teams will reconvene on Tuesday night as each team’s Opening Day starter takes the mound for the second time. Luis Castillo (0-1, 7.20 ERA) will pitch against Shane Bieber (1-0, 0.00 ERA).
