Best free agent signing for Chargers’ division rivals
The NFL free agency period is in the rearview.
The Chargers steadily retooled their roster, bringing in new players and retaining a few to kick off the Jim Harbaugh era.
But how did the other AFC West teams fare? Let’s take a look at the best signing for each team.
Denver Broncos: S Brandon Jones
In a shocking move, the Broncos released veteran Justin Simmons, which left many wondering what they were going to do with the position.
Insert Jones.
This past season with the Dolphins, he posted a career-high in interceptions (2). He did his best work around the line of scrimmage in Miami, where he was impactful against the run and as a blitzer. But he gives Denver a versatile player who can do a few things in Vance Joseph’s defense.
Kansas City Chiefs: WR Marquise Brown
The Chiefs have been missing a vertical threat since losing Tyreek Hill a couple of seasons ago. The void was filled by Brown, who also replaces Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
Brown has amassed 50 receptions for four consecutive seasons. In six seasons, Brown has produced 53 explosive-play receptions (20 or more yards), according to ESPN’s Matt Bowen.
It shouldn’t take long for Patrick Mahomes to develop a rapport with the speedy Brown.
Las Vegas Raiders: DT Christian Wilkins
Former Chargers general manager Tom Telesco’s first move as the Raiders’ GM was the signing of Wilkins, who the Dolphins surprisingly released. Wilkins, the top defensive tackle on the market, signed to a four-year, $110 million contract.
Wilkins is coming off a season in which he amassed career highs in sacks (nine), quarterback pressures (61), and quarterback hits (23). He was just as impactful against the run, which is why Las Vegas brought him in, to aid a bottom-of-the-barrel run defense.
