Announcement: Raiders Closing in on Deal to Sign $25.7 Million Backup QB as Quarterback Position Remains Uncertain

The Las Vegas Raiders’ quarterback situation is uncertain and Jacksonville Jaguars’ backup Mac Jones is potential target if things don’t improve.

Jones was the New England Patriots’ No. 15 overall pick in 2021. He never truly found his footing with the Patriots and was shipped out to Jacksonville this offseason for a sixth-round pick.

Raiders’ Quarterback Situation

Jones recently landed on Bleacher Report’s “Trade Block Big Board” and the Las Vegas Raiders were cited as potential suitors.

“The Las Vegas Raiders consider adding Jones if the Gardner Minshew II experiment doesn’t work and the team doesn’t love the long-term prospects of Aidan O’Connell,” B/R’s Kristopher Knox wrote.

The Raiders have faced challenges at the quarterback position, with inconsistent performances and injuries creating a need for a reliable and capable leader under center. The team has cycled through various options, but none have provided the long-term solution the Raiders are looking for. With the season underway and playoff aspirations on the line, the Raiders are looking to bring in a proven talent to stabilize the position.

Jones has flashed potential during his career, notably as a rookie in 2021. He passed for 3,801 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions and was named a Pro Bowl replacement.

But things quickly went south for Jones. He was benched multiple times and finished his final season in New England with 2,120 yards, 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Jones is currently listed as QB No. 2 behind Trevor Lawrence. But it’d be hard for Jacksonville to resist if a QB-needy team came knocking with the right offer once the season gets rolling.

Why the Move Makes Sense for Both Sides

For the Raiders, acquiring Mac Jones represents an opportunity to bring in a young yet experienced quarterback who can grow with the team. Jones’ skill set aligns well with the offensive scheme the Raiders are looking to implement, which relies on quick decision-making and precision passing.

From Jones’ perspective, the move to Las Vegas could provide a fresh start and a chance to solidify his status as a franchise quarterback. With a new team, coaching staff, and offensive weapons at his disposal, Jones could revitalize his career and prove that he can be a long-term solution for an NFL team.

If the deal is finalized, it could be a pivotal moment for both the Raiders and Jones, with the potential to shape the future of the franchise. All eyes will be on Las Vegas to see how this development unfolds and whether Jones can fulfill the high expectations that come with this significant investment.
