“Big reason why i’m going:” Former Rabbitohs star is set to join the Dragons, hoping Hunt stays

The Dragons’ star is off contract in 2025.

Former South Sydney hooker Damien Cook is set to join the St George Illawarra Dragons for the 2025 season.

After spending seven years with the Rabbitohs, Cook, 33, will return to the club where he made his debut in 2013.

This Sunday in Port Moresby, he will also skipper Australia’s Prime Minister’s XIII against PNG.

With Cook and star recruit Valentine Holmes joining the team, the Dragons, who have struggled in previous seasons and have not made the finals since 2018, are hoping to move up the ladder in the future.

Cook has disclosed that his choice to join the Dragons was heavily influenced by club veteran Ben Hunt.

Cook told The Daily Telegraph, “I’m going there mainly because of him (Hunt).”

“When I saw him the other day, everything was going well for the Dragons.

He is nearing the conclusion of his professional life. I’m not sure whether he intends to finish up or stays for a few more years. You would need to ask him.

This year, there was a lot of conjecture around Ben Hunt, including concerns about his future with the Dragons and possible rumors that he would return to his native Queensland.

At the end of 2025, the Maroons and Kangaroos star’s contract expires. Following eight years with

“He has to go through it now, just as I did when I came off-contract. Cook stated, “He’ll choose what’s best for himself and his family.”

Damien Cook intends to add a wealth of experience to the Dragons team after 216 NRL appearances, 17 State of Origin games, and four Test matches for Australia.

Given that Jacob Liddle has filled the number 9 jersey the entire season, it is unclear if Cook will take it.

The rivalry for the starting hooker position may give the club a unique dimension by 2025.

It’s not a war, but rather teamwork. Our collaboration will be excellent.

He was among the top two players for the Dragons and had an excellent season.

“We’ll figure it out, and it’ll be a nice little combo that can help the Dragons climb the ladder to where they should be.”

By adding seasoned players, head coach Shane Flanagan hopes to elevate the Dragons’ spirits and move the team away from being the clear favorites.

They admired all he was doing and the course the club was taking.

They have a wonderful youthful side together with some maturity. I’m hoping I can contribute.

Returning to the club where he made his debut, Damien Cook is eager to start a new chapter in his life and hopes that his skill and speed will give the Dragons a much-needed spark.
