Announcement: Commanders closing in on deal to sign veteran $19 million cornerback before deadline to reinforce playoff hopes

Adam Peters has just a few hours remaining to figure out if there is a good deal to be had before the trade deadline.

 

The Washington Commanders general manager hasn’t made any big splashes since taking the job. His moves are methodical and always with the bigger picture in mind. The team is sitting at 6-2 with enhancing hopes of making the postseason, so Peters could take this opportunity to strike and solve a potential problem position.

Commanders linked with Jonathan Jones before 2024 trade deadline

This was a sentiment echoed by Kevin Patra from NFL.com. The analyst thought Peters should be mildly aggressive before the November 5 cut-off point. He also named New England Patriots cornerback Jonathan Jones as someone who makes a ton of sense.

“Now’s not the time for GM Adam Peters to sit still. Assuming he follows the blueprint established by the 49ers — with whom Peters spent the past seven seasons — Washington should be in the market to add an ancillary piece or two before the deadline. [Jonathan] Jones, being an impending free agent, is a solid candidate to move. The 31-year-old veteran would bring savvy to the back end of the Commanders’ defense. The Commanders should lean into their quick turnaround under [Dan] Quinn by making moves at the deadline to strengthen the defense ahead of the stretch run.”

The Commanders’ defense has improved somewhat over the last few weeks. Joe Whitt Jr. wasn’t thrilled with how they closed out the game against the Chicago Bears, but the progress is encouraging nonetheless.

They are currently relying on Benjamin St-Juste and second-round rookie Mike Sainristil as their outside coverage options. Noah Igbinoghene is performing well enough in the nickel role. However, the ongoing inconsistencies and reduced playing time for Emmanuel Forbes Jr. indicate a distinct lack of trust in the former first-round selection out of Mississippi State.

Jones isn’t the physically imposing cornerback normally associated with Dan Quinn’s defenses. However, he’s an accomplished performer despite his advancing years. The Auburn product is also a two-time Super Bowl winner, which should command instant respect from the moment he gets into the locker room in this scenario.

 

This could be a decent option for the Commanders if the price is right. The fact Jones is out of contract next spring might drive the price down. Washington won’t want to sacrifice too much for someone who may become a short-term rental if things don’t work out. Peters also needs to find the right character capable of fitting into Washington’s remarkable culture shift quickly.

 

It’s a fine line for Peters to navigate in the coming days. Quinn acknowledged during his media availability this week that calls are being made without anything concrete emerging so far. If the front office leader makes a move or stands pat, there needs to be a level of trust attached either way.

Peters has done a sensational job so far. He hired the right head coach and most of his roster moves have paid off. There’s also a lot to like about his first NFL Draft class spearheaded by quarterback sensation Jayden Daniels.

 

Any upgrades would be welcome. But don’t be surprised if Peters holds firm if there’s any semblance of doubt whatsoever.
